Route details

Short characteristics

This is a great route running in the southern part across forest hills covering the largest volcanic basalt cover in Poland. In its northern part the route is much lower and it is flatter. You ride across open agricultural areas with beautiful views over the West Sudetes Foothills. Outside Luban, the route runs mainly on field and forest dirt roads. There are some rather gentle climbs and descents.

Stone pits and quarries

Excellent quality building material was an impulse for the development of mining industry in the vicinity of Luban. It is no exaggeration to say that it directly contributed to the establishment of the town. Already in the Middle Ages basalt deposits were exploited in that area. With the development of technology the number of mining plants increased. Until today, Eurovia plants have produced millions of tons of basalt aggregate annually. The described route allows you to look at different stages of the mining industry of the region. From the quarry – a natural monument literally in the town – through charming forest lakes made by flooding smaller quarries. The track also leads past the gigantic already exploited deposits of the Ksieginki 1 mine. You can look in there directly from the road. Larger explorations are also possible but you should arrange access to the facility in advance.

Luban Great Forest

The development of the mining industry has always been in conflict with the protection of the beautiful beech forest that grew there. Sometimes, it has been preserved only in the name of a place like Bukowa Gora (Beech Mountain). Fortunately, however, some beautiful old trees still remain. Most of them are in the vicinity of the Lisciasta (Leafy) Mountain a bit off the route. Regardless of the reconstruction of the tree stand made there, Luban Forest remains a beautiful and compact forest complex where cycling is a pleasure.
