Route details

Brief characteristics

It is a linear route connecting Jawor with Zlotoryja. The route is seemingly calm, because according to the statistics, only 36km and nearly 600m of elevation gain. But when you add a return (one way or another) to that, the route gets pretty solid, including several over 10% uphill and downhill stretches. You mostly cycle on asphalt but there also are some hard dirt roads in the forest and in the fields. The best starting points are Jawor and Zlotoryja. The former can be reached by train. If you are not a fan of riding on perfectly smooth, flat bicycle paths, you can start in Mysliborz, about 8 km further and already within the Kaczawa Foothills.

The route runs through selected objects of the European Reformation Route, which is included in the list of European Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, more information at : www.reformationroutes.eu

The Land of Extinct Volcanoes

This term hides the ‘prosaic’ Kaczawa Foothills – the magical foothills. It is easy to find out about it by finding such names on the map as: Wikolak (Werewolf), Wilcza (Wolf) Mountain, Czarcia (Devil’s) Mountain, Czartowska (Devil’s) Rock, Trupien (Death Mountain), Diabelska (Hellish) Mountain, Diablak (Little Devil), there is also the Ostrzyca Mountain nicknamed: Polish Mount Fuji. The names are not accidental as the area is covered with characteristic low extinct old volcanic cones reminding that the devil used to brew there. You will find a lot of interesting remains of orogenic processes as well as numerous traces of former mining and metallurgical activity. In addition, there are great landscape values associated with the undulating terrain and nature. The northern part of the Foothills is occupied by the Chelmy Landscape Park with a few interesting gorges heavily covered with forest. The route leads through probably the most interesting micro-region: the Zlotoryja Foothills.
